Back to the transcriptions…

After working on my Ysaÿe project, well, the last two Poème’s are not finished yet because I am still waiting for the final piano parts, and because editing the many Viennese music-wind-arrangements of my friend isn’t always satisfying, I am now returning to the challange of transcription of anything for violin.

There is this very interesting and virtuoso piano work, by a German (of Polish-Jewis decent) Moritz Moszkovski, Caprice Espagnol. Actually, the idea of transcribing this music came years ago, when I sold my last old analogue audio equipment, a reel to reel Tandberg tape recorder, with all the tapes included. I knew, those tapes aren’t any longer really usable, but this guy who bought it (in London) insisted to take them and he also wanted to digitalize all the recordings on them. And there was this nice recording of the Moszkovski piece, played by an old friend over 30 years ago, wonderful pianist. (now he is professor at UCLA)

Since I really like to work with the harp/violin combination, I made a first sketch right the way but somehow I left it alone after the basic editing. Just now, after almost 3 years, I thought I should finish it, so I asked my daughter to correct the harp part and I did finalize the violin part.

As my harpist daughter got really busy in the last couple of years or so, I thought I could also go back to the solo violin niche where I made some wonderful transcriptions, mainly of Bach keyboard works. But at this time I attempted something completely different. The solo violin “version” of Fantaisie Impromptu by Chopin was a real challenge and I am quite pleased how it turned out. Also, still by Bach, I am working on one of his keyboard Partitas.

The Chopin piece is now almost ready for recording too, (of course by myself) however, getting to a studio isn’t the easies task these days.

Of course, I still have all my great ProTools setup with beautiful mics, amps, etc. also for possible location work but just for one short piece it would be silly to rent a place. So I am waiting until we are ready to do also the two last Ysaÿe Poème’s (two violins/piano, and violin/cello/piano) and hopefulle by then I’ll have even more solo violin transcriptions as well. (working on it!)
