Preface to this edition:
The first edition of the string trio “Le Chimay” by Eugène Ysaÿe was made in 1997, coinciding with Canadian premiere performances.
Based on the facsimile edition of the parts published by Schott Frères, a modern computer print with score and parts was created, however the performances revealed several questionable passages, not characteristic of Ysaÿe’s musical style of writing. Although this edited copy was sent to Schott Frères in Belgium, the reply was that there was no interest in this music. Several years later, (2008) after Schott Music in Germany took possession of the materials in Belgium, the copy we had prepared was published by them.
In the meantime, further research into other works by Ysaÿe led us to performing and preparing a score with parts of the Sonata for two violins, which had been available only as a facsimile of the score. This in turn led to the discovery of the manuscript of the parts of the complete Trio “Le Londres”, in three movements for two violins and viola. The first movement of this trio had been published by Schott Frères, but the plates were destroyed by fire. Our new edition of this Trio was published by Schott Music, Germany in 2009.
During the past decade, research into further works by Ysaÿe, showed that in many of his “Poème’s” there are numerous misprints in the original editions. Furthermore, access to manuscripts enabled the publication of some of his early concertos. Amongst these collections there was a score of a second string trio, which has not been published to date. Also, a complete manuscript score of the trio known as “Le Chimay”, showed that there were many corrections in Ysaÿe’s handwriting to what had been previously published as parts, which revealed the beauty of this marvellous composition.
This work has the title, “À son vieil ami Léon van Hout – Premier Trio de Concert Op. 33 (En une partie) pour Violon – Alto – Violoncelle”.
