This work is a transcription for violin and harp of Ravel’s amazing La Valse. This Viennese valse in Ravel’s unmistakeable language is a great challenge for both, violin and harp due to the fact that a huge modern orchestral score has been reduced to these two instruments. This is most likely at the high end of technical demands, especially for the harp.
Helping to enlarge the repertoire of the violin & harp literature, this is a nice change for players and audience equally, merging the whole orchestra into a duet of violin and harp.
This is a transcription as close as possible to the original piano version of the work. Since there are very strong chromatic structures, there are many changes to the harp part, although much of the orchestral harp part has been included, especially at glissandi. There is a very strong cooperation between the instruments, often the violin has the accompanying part. Original keys and modulations have been kept, but enharmonic notation has been used to facilitate playing whenever necessary.
Written by Hungarian violin virtuoso Nandor Szederkenyi, former concertmaster in several major orchestras from Japan to Austria, who also had a long career as soloist.
Published using the leading notation software Finale, he includes bowings and fingerings, in collaboration with his duo partner/daughter who was taking care of the pedal markings of the harp part.
